Room 1
In the first room, formerly the Chapel of the Rosary, visitors can admire paintings dating from the 15th to the 17th century, including the most significant piece of the entire museum collection: The Madonna with the Puer Dolorosus.
The room also preserves a highly important inscription that certifies the church’s consecration to the Virgin Mary, dating back to 1127.

In the first room, former Rosary chapel, you can admire paintings ranging from the 15th to the 17th century; on the right wall we find four large 17th-century canvases by the Ortona painter Tommaso Alessandrino, among which the most evocative is “The Last Judgment” where the author describes in detail the three realms of the afterlife. On the left wall, you can admire the splendid triptych by the 17th-century Bergamo artist Giovan Battista Spinelli. The work depicts, against the background of a majestic coronation of the Virgin, a testimony of the landscape of a part of ancient Ortona with the cathedral of St. Thomas the Apostle as it was in the 1600s. No less interesting is the adjacent canvas, by an unknown artist, depicting the Nativity with the “adoration of the shepherds”: among the many symbols and characters, the self-portrait of the painter is recognizable, carrying a scroll with the date 1581. At the end of the room, two remarkable 15th-century panels by unknown artists stand out: “The Holy Face of Lucca and the miracle of the jester” and, the “most significant work of the” entire museum collection, “The Madonna with the puer dolorosus”, a unique piece at an iconographic level for the representation of the child Jesus but with all the signs of the passion. Of considerable importance is the stone that attests to the consecration of the church to the Virgin Mary dating back to 1127. The room is enriched by anthropomorphic reliquaries, a “holy water font from the 17th century, and a high relief depicting “The” Ecce Homo”.
